Niall Kent and Prof. Coppens awarded EPSRC Discovery-To-Use grant

Niall Kent and Prof. Coppens have been awarded an EPSRC Discovery-To-Use grant of £50,000. The aim of the scheme is to provide seed funding to catalyse commercial activity stemming from research. This project follows on the back of some innovative research done within the NICE group at UCL that aims to improve treatment of musculoskeletal injuries by developing and patenting novel materials to repair hard tissue within the body. This project will fund necessary preclinical studies essential for the evaluation of novel biomaterials with the aim of eventually taking these materials to clinical use.

She will use ARCHER supercomputer for 6 months to study behavior of biomolecules confined in ordered amorphous silica through all-atom molecular dynamic simulations with explicit water and counter-ions.The simulations will provide a better understanding of the interplay between the adsorbed proteins and mesoporous materials which is necessary to improve drug delivery systems by improving stability and controlled release of the active drug at the site of interest.
