Research Statement

My research examines protein adsorption onto tightly-fitting mesoporous silica and the effects of nano-confinement on the catalytic activity of these proteins. External stresses are applied to the protein-silica composite that would denature the protein in its free state, such as extreme pH, extreme temperatures, the presence of proteases, and the presence of organic solvents. By examining the structure and activity of the adsorbed proteins after they are exposed to these stresses, I hope to test the boundaries of potential drug delivery and biocatalytic applications of these materials. Additionally, I aim to acquire a deeper understanding of the mechanism of protein adsorption onto mesoporous materials and how adsorption is affected by the materials' morphology and surface chemistry.
